Scene in Context - Week Two

A change of scene
God is continually speaking to us. Are we listening?
- Begin by chatting about the Seeds to Sow question.
- Then as a group look at the illustrated scene for the week. What do you notice in the images, what catches your eye? What interests or intrigues you? What do you imagine is going on in this scene? The idea is that these images are storyboards for the scenes you picture in your head so there’s no right or wrong answers!
- Then read our Bible reading for the week keeping in mind the scene you have just been discussing.
- Then return to the image and go through the accompanying questions.
SEEDS TO SOW: Does living in a rural or an urban environment change how we read the Bible?
This week’s scene: Someone sitting quietly in a refugee camp praying. Look at the illustration. Discuss as a group what you think is going on in the scene. (The yellow panel above second from the left.)
Read Hebrews 11: 8-16
Q: How does the scene in the image affect what’s in your mind as you read the text? What are the sights, smells and sounds that you imagine in the scene?
Q: How does reading the text change how you see the scene? One of the themes of this reading is longing and yearning. Where do we see longing in the image?
Q: Across the Bible, human history, and our current news cycles, there are people forced to flee their homes for many different reasons. God has compassion for them all. How can our belonging to ‘a heavenly country’ — a place above all earthly divisions and borders — empower us to show God’s compassion for the refugee, the sojourner, and the displaced? What prayers and actions can we make as citizens of heavenly country to support those who find themselves uprooted or rootless?
