Opening scenes

What happens when we pair ancient words with contemporary images? For this special edition Connect study we have a series of images for us to reflect on alongside our Bible texts as we explore their contemporary relevance to our lives.

  • Begin by chatting about the Seeds to Sow question.
  • Then as a group look at the illustrated scene for the week. What do you notice in the images, what catches your eye? What interests or intrigues you? What do you imagine is going on in this scene? The idea is that these images are storyboards for the scenes you picture in your head so there’s no right or wrong answers!
  • Then read our Bible reading for the week keeping in mind the scene you have just been discussing.
  • Then return to the image and go through the accompanying questions.

SEEDS TO SOW: How does extreme wealth and poverty change how people read the Bible?

This week’s scene: Families talking to one another as they queue at a food bank. Look at the image. Discuss as a group what you think is going on in the scene. (The blue panel above on the far left.)

Read Psalm 107: 1-9

Q: How does the scene in the image affect what’s in your mind as you read the psalm? What kind of conversations do you think the characters in the scene are having?

Q: How does reading the psalm change how you see the scene? What words or phrases leap out at you that you take back to the image?

Q: While we often try to ignore hunger and poverty in wider society God never does. What can your group do to help feed people near and far? What organisations or initiatives could you support?
