Romans 12:3-8

Humble Service in the Body of Christ

3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a]faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Today as we reflect on all the sporting activity that has happened over the weekend, be it Lewis Hamilton's win at Silverstone, or Andy Murray's  fantastic Wimbledon success, or the heroic performance of the Portugal team. All these winners recognise that success comes from being part of a team. Teams that are successful are teams that recognise the importance of nurturing  relationships.

Learning the significance of honouring each other is the key to building a successful team. Perhaps we should all take some time this week to honour the people who have given so much to allow us to be the people we have become.

When we contrast all this against the disarray of our politicians and the divisions we see in so many of our congregations, and the rise of racial tensions, in America and Europe, let us pray that a new spirit of respect and honour might breakout across our world.

Lord,
So many people under pressure - to win
Politicians
Sports men and women
Children at school
Professionals at work
The list goes on.
Where can we find respite
from the pressures of life?
Give us all an opportunity to think again,
to consider the needs of our neighbours
To recognise the gifts others bring
Help us all today to see the potential in each other

Lord
Teach me how to serve well
and give me the grace to allow others to return service
Draw near to all who are in authority
