Psalm 119: 9-16 (NIV)

9 How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
    By living according to your word.
10 I seek you with all my heart;
    do not let me stray from your commands.
11 I have hidden your word in my heart
    that I might not sin against you.
12 Praise be to you, Lord;
    teach me your decrees.
13 With my lips I recount
    all the laws that come from your mouth.
14 I rejoice in following your statutes
    as one rejoices in great riches.
15 I meditate on your precepts
    and consider your ways.
16 I delight in your decrees;
    I will not neglect your word.

Have you ever noticed that good things to do are hard? On the other hand, easy things tend to be kind of fruitless. For example, I can’t stop playing Scrabble on my iPhone. I just love putting those letters in there and getting points. But, it doesn’t take long for me to realise that I’ve used up a great deal of time playing Scrabble.

The psalmist says in verse 15, “I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.”

There were times in my life when I just couldn’t get enough Bible! I related to this psalm.  I thought, “Yeah, I’m just like this Psalmist. I have God’s word hidden in my heart too. All I want to do is think about God and talk about his word.” Over time life creeps up on you, and you feel like you can’t even give the emotional energy it takes to even read one verse. “I can’t even handle anything right now. I’m just going to pass the time with iPhone Scrabble.”

Today, for those of us that feel worn out by everyday life, let’s consider doing something hard, but good. Push through the emotional pain of giving up your phone for a little while. Open the word of God and let God himself speak to you. You don’t have to be a pastor, or understand Hebrew, or ancient anthropology. Just consider God’s ways. Don’t neglect God’s word. It will be good.

PRAYER:

Dear God as we consider your word, give us the strength to resist easy, entertaining immediate gratification. Your word resides in our hearts forever, and so as we read or listen, it produces good fruit that doesn’t spoil. Put me on the good path, even if it’s hard or painful.

Lent Disciplines

Choose a verse from the Bible and over the course of the day have a go at memorising it.
