Shimmering brilliance

May 30, 2013 0 0

Revelation 21: 21-25

The twelve gates were twelve pearls; each gate was made from a single pearl.  The street of the city was of pure gold, transparent as glass.  I did not see a temple in the city, because its temple is the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb.  The city has no need of the sun or the moon to shine on it, because the glory of God shines on it, and the Lamb is its lamp.  The peoples of the world will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their wealth into it.  The gates of the city will stand open all day; they will never be closed, because there will be no night there.

In the shimmer of pearls we see a beauty which has grown from the ordinary:
precious jewels from grit and grime.
God of Wisdom, who did not recoil from the ordinary grit and grime of everyday living,
show me how to be wise and to learn from you.

In the glistening brilliance of gold we see a value which has come from the depths of the earth:
precious minerals from rock and soil.
God of Wisdom, who brings light to even the most difficult of situations,
open my eyes to the hidden depths of the teaching you provide each day.

Let the gates of what we build not only offer safety and protection, but also welcome.
Amen.
