Isaiah 40: 30 (NIVUK)

30

Even youths grow tired and weary,
    and young men stumble and fall;

This verse is a timely reminder of our human limitations. Even those who seem to be at the peak of strength — the young, energetic, and seemingly unstoppable — eventually run out of steam. In my head I’m still in my 20s — I still think I can whizz about, lug about heavy stuff and stay up to all hours. And I’m sure you can guess where that ends!  It's a humbling truth that no matter how fit, lively and clever we think we are, we all have moments of exhaustion, doubt, and meltdown.

In a world that often encourages us to be busy, with a 24 hour culture (isn’t New York the city that never sleeps?), this verse reminds us it's okay to be tired. It's not a flaw — it's part of being human. Our physical and emotional resources are not never-ending.

Today's verse is in contrast to tomorrow’s verse — more about that tomorrow!

But today’s verse invites us to stop relying solely on our own strength and to trust in God — God has infinite strength that doesn’t wear out.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

Even the strongest among us grow weary.
Even the young, full of energy and purpose, stumble and fall.
Your Word reminds us that no one escapes exhaustion,
from times of weakness or moments of breaking.

Thank You for understanding our limitations,
for meeting our weariness with compassion and grace.

Teach us to come to You when we need lifted.
Renew our strength when it fades.
Remind us that it's absolutely fine to need You.

Help us to trust in the promise that when we are weak, You are strong.

In Jesus' name,
Amen.
