Luke 17: 20-21 (NRSVA)

20 Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, and he answered, ‘The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed; 21 nor will they say, “Look, here it is!” or “There it is!” For, in fact, the kingdom of God is among you.’

“…God’s Kingdom is already among you.” (From Luke 17: 20-21 in The Message).

Jesus often spoke of the Kingdom of Heaven or the Kingdom of God…

Jesus began his earthly ministry by proclaiming that the Kingdom had come near…

We pray for it — Thy Kingdom come…

God’s reign!

But we’re not to look to this as something still yet to come… Jesus says it is already among us…

The Kingdom is within.

What if the Kingdom is already here?

In the acts of love and compassion we share with one another… what if that’s the Kingdom?

What if the Kingdom isn’t a physical place or time… but is a state…?

A state of being in relationship with God?

An indwelling of us in God and God in us?

What if the Kingdom is Jesus at work in us…

Making all things new,

Birthing the Kingdom anew with each act of love,

Each word of care…

Each moment we put our trust in Jesus and rely on his ways and not on our own?

What if the Kingdom is our life in relationship with God and with one another… in God?

And the Kingdom grows as we grow in our relationship with and our likeness to Jesus in community with one another…

As we walk both towards God and with God each day?

What if that is Kingdom living?

Kingdom bringing?

And it’s not what we do, but what God does in us?

May your Kingdom come O Lord,

And let it be grown in me.
