Hebrews 10: 11-14

11 Every Jewish priest performs his services every day and offers the same sacrifices many times; but these sacrifices can never take away sins. 12 Christ, however, offered one sacrifice for sins, an offering that is effective forever, and then he sat down at the right side of God. 13 There he now waits until God puts his enemies as a footstool under his feet. 14 With one sacrifice, then, he has made perfect forever those who are purified from sin.

Would you Adam and Eve it, I have my faults! I get it wrong. I sometimes say the wrong thing and sometimes combine that with the wrong moment too! But keep it quiet, I don’t want to spoil the image of perfection I strive to display! Seemingly one of my faults, which my children have pointed out to me, is my tendency to be “always right” – so much so that the boys once bought me a t-shirt which stated boldly on the front: “I may not be perfect, but it scares me how close I am!”

Joking apart, none of us are perfect, we know that. There is nothing we can do to store up credits with God – through Jesus he has shown his love for us and shown us the extent of his love on the Cross where we know we are forgiven. That forgiveness cannot be bought or earned, it is God’s gift. Let’s accept it then, and show our faith by striving for perfection, even though it is out of the reach of any one of us.

Prayer:

Lord God, in love, in Jesus, you sought us out. You sent Jesus into this world, not to be our judge, but to be our Saviour. What love we see in him. We claim your gift of forgiveness, freely given. When we survey the wondrous Cross on which Jesus died to take away our sins, once again we promise you our life, our soul, our all. Amen.
