2 Timothy 1: 4-5 (NRSVA)

4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you.

I’m told I have my great-grandmother’s face. Some version of it seems to turn up at least once in every generation, going down the female line. Now that I am a grandmother myself, I wonder what I have passed down or may be able to pass down to my three wonderful wee sparks of life and joy. Faith too, can be a kind of heritage, passed down to us, not just by family members, but by other mentors who have led the way. Let’s take a moment to be thankful for them.

PRAYER:

Lord

My eyes are my own

Yet in their colour, and their shape, in the precise way they sit above my cheekbones, they carry something of those who have come before me.

Thank you for those who have coloured and shaped my faith

For the richness and depth, the clarity and vision, they offered.

Their hands overlay mine; their feet walk before me, as I try to use what they have taught me.

Bless their memory and their heritage as it entwines with mine.

Amen.
