Enjoyment of Everyday Life

Rachel July 19, 2016 0 0

Ecclesiastes 8 : 15

So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.

Not very many of us need much encouragement to ‘eat and drink and be glad’.  As the writer says, there are few better things in life!  Perhaps though, some of us miss out on the most important element of enjoying what we eat and drink, by concentrating on the quantity rather than the quality of what goes in our mouths.  As a nation, the French don’t ‘do’ diets and the reasons for that is their habit of eating slowly, knowing when to stop and enjoying the company around the table as much as what’s on it. Have we lost the art of savouring our food?  Is it ‘just’ food and drink? A means to an end? What if we looked on every fork and spoonful and sip as a special gift?

Lord of all,
For kitchen smells that evoke memories
Of people and places and happy times….
For food that surprises us in its presentation and taste
For drinks that not only quench thirst
But add to the richness of a meal – we give you thanks.

For the creativity of those who combine ingredients to make something different and wonderful.
But above all for those who share feasts and snacks with us – we give you thanks.
Help us not to rush through our food
But to savour and enjoy it instead
Seeing in it,
How blessed we are.
And how very fortunate too.
