Psalm 34: 11-14 (NRSVA)

11 Come, O children, listen to me;
    I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 Which of you desires life,
    and covets many days to enjoy good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil,
    and your lips from speaking deceit.
14 Depart from evil, and do good;
    seek peace, and pursue it.

Why is it that classic villains often dream of long life, of immortality? I doubt it is because they want ‘many days to enjoy good’ more likely it is ‘fear of the Lord’, or whatever judgement their character believes awaits them after a life of making others miserable and wearing pretty terrible outfits.

While I dream of being lucky enough to live a long life and spend many years with people I love, I don’t dream of immortality. I wouldn’t want a suitcase so full of new stories that I couldn’t remember any of the best ones anymore or so empty of dreams that I had nothing left to drive me forward.

Life isn’t a comic or a film, I cannot achieve immortality on earth or chose to wear superhero tights and magically be able to fly. All I can do with my reality right now is to take advice from this psalm and seek peace. Peace with my time left on earth, peace with my actions and peace with my loved ones. That peace would really be living the dream.

PRAYER:

Dear immortal God

You see our time on earth in a way we cannot comprehend.

You excitedly join our stories even though you have read every chapter. Thank you.

Help us to find peace with our lives and within ourselves.

Amen
