Luke 4:16-21

16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 ‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
    because he has anointed me
    to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
    and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’[a]

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, ‘Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.’

God, my strength, my Saviour
come save me, set me free,
God, my hope, my Deliverer
lift me up, put a new heart in me.

Lord, wash me and I will be clean.
On this first Sunday of this new year,
fill me with your Spirit,
lift me up above the temptations
I so easily fall into
take all my troubles and woes,
and make me fresh.
Let me know deep within me that you
bring good news to the poor,
liberty to the captives
healing to the afflicted
and freedom to the oppressed.
As I reflect on all that happened in my life
and plan the way ahead,
let me stand with those who need me most;
help me know I am loved by you
and there is nothing you cannot overcome.
Save me from my vain ambitions
my self-deceit, my false perceptions,
open me to all you give
and let me live in your presence each day,
offering hope and peace and kindness to all.

My Child,
remember all whom you travel with
and walk lightly with them;
do not worry, do not be afraid,
for I bring tidings of great joy;
take my hand and walk with me
that we might bring freedom and new life
to those who need our love.
