Matthew 18:1-7

The greatest in the kingdom of heaven

18 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’

2 He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. 3 And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

Causing to stumble

6 ‘If anyone causes one of these little ones – those who believe in me – to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung round their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. 7 Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!

God, my strength, my Saviour
come save me, set me free,
God, my hope, my Deliverer
lift me up, put a new heart in me.

I don’t want to be special any more.
I don’t want to keep the secret any more.
I don’t want him to touch me again.
I know it’s wrong, I know it shouldn’t be,
but I am afraid.
It hurts me – body and soul,
but I can’t feel any more.
I have made myself small.
I have made myself look unattractive.
I have hidden under the stair,
and I have hidden my self in a dark place
and I can’t take any more.

My Child,
you are safe – come into the light.
You are loved for who you are,
not what someone else thinks you are.
You are beautiful in every way
because you are you – and that alone.
Do not be afraid – I am here,
ask for whatever you need:
I will tend your wounds.
I will give you strength to survive.
I will give you words to speak out.
