Jeremiah 1: 4-10 (NIVUK)

4 The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

5 ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
    before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.’

6 ‘Alas, Sovereign Lord,’ I said, ‘I do not know how to speak; I am too young.’

7 But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, “I am too young.” You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the Lord.

9 Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, ‘I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.’

A group of young people in a classroom organising a group to advocate for climate change.

The young people are all animated, bursting with ideas that bounce off one another. Their faces are alive with excitement, their voices strong and purposeful.

A girl who has been slouched over a desk at the back of the class, gets up and sullenly goes over to the group.

‘I don’t know why you are bothered with all this. You are wasting your time,’ she spits out at them. ‘The world is ruined for us. We are already experiencing the effects of climate change. You just need to look at the news. Wildfires, droughts, rising temperatures. What can we do? Absolutely nothing. No one is going to listen. We are too young. All people care about is money and being comfortable. Governments only listen to big business.’

Anna, one of the group steps forward and says to the girl, ‘You are wrong. We do have a voice and we do have a platform. We can speak to our family and friends. We can speak to local businesses and councillors. We can share stories on our social media. We can live by example to influence others. We might be young but in a couple of years we will be able to vote. Our voice matters. We shouldn’t be afraid to speak and act for climate justice. Here, give me your phone and I’ll show you some online stories of others like us, who have managed to bring about positive change. It will give you hope.’

Prayer:

Lord God

Forgive us when we look away from the damage inflicted upon your creation

Strip us of our apathy

Dissolve our hearts of stone

Cleanse our jaded spirits

Take away our fear

Fill us with your love

Give us hearts that seek your justice

Voices that challenge

Hands that act to care

And spirits that are alive in you

Amen
