Old things and new things…

Isaiah 43: 18-19 (NIVUK)
18
‘Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.19
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.
I wonder if sometimes you feel like you're in a wilderness or waiting for something new to begin? Within our own church there is a bit of a hiatus as we are working towards a union with another church. We’re in a state of flux — worried about buildings, how we’ll fit in two morning worship services, who’ll be in charge of the flowers… and so on! It’s easy to cling on to what’s ‘aye been’ and hunker down.
However, Isaiah 43:18-19 is a powerful reminder that sometimes we have to let go of the past and remain open to the new things God is doing. It encourages us not to dwell on former errors, arguments, worries or even past successes, but to trust that God is actively working in our lives — even when things seem hopeless or insurmountable. He promises to make a way in the wilderness and bring life to dry places, offering hope and renewal in times of transition or uncertainty. This verse invites us to see and grab hold of the fresh opportunities He is unfolding before us. How exciting is that!?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being a God of new beginnings.
Help us to hold the past lightly — every regret, failure,
and the comfortable stuff that is holding us back.
Open our eyes to see the new thing You are doing.
Give us faith to walk with you in the wilderness
and to trust that You are bringing streams to the dry places of our hearts.
Even when we don’t understand, help us know Your presence and trust you
so that we can move forward with hope.
We trust that You are working all things for good,
and surrender to the newness You are bringing.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
