Isaiah 43: 20-21 (NIVUK)

20

The wild animals honour me,
    the jackals and the owls,
because I provide water in the wilderness
    and streams in the wasteland,
to give drink to my people, my chosen,

21

the people I formed for myself
that they may proclaim my praise.

Life has its ups and downs doesn’t it!

This week I’ve shared some of the downs and the ups in my own life and those of our wee community here in Edinburgh. On Palm Sunday our two churches joined together along with the choirs from both churches. The choir performed a piece for us and we sang together our favourite Palm Sunday hymns. The church was crammed — hardly a seat left — the singing was uplifting and people were joyful. Despite uncertain times we joined together to offer our praise to the Lord — how wonderful!

These verses highlight God's deep care and provision for us — not only for creation but particularly for His people. In the wilderness, God brings water, a symbol of life, renewal, and sustenance. Even the wild animals know and are thankful to the Creator. But even more than that, God’s ultimate purpose in providing for His people is clear: so that they may proclaim His praise.

How amazing that we are not just recipients of God's blessings — we're chosen, created for a purpose, and called to respond with worship. When God gives drink to our dry seasons, it’s not only for our comfort but to draw us closer to Him in thankfulness and to reflect His goodness to all we meet. An amazing example of relationship and response.

Prayer:

Gracious God,

Thank You that you provide for us in every season, even in the wilderness.

When things feel dry or hopeless, You are the One who provides living water for our souls.

We know you care for all creation, and are so thankful that You care for us.

Help us to never take Your provision for granted, but to respond with praising hearts.

May our life reflect Your goodness and bring glory to Your name.

Use us, Lord, and our worship of you as a witness to Your faithfulness.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
