En La Noche

by Ray Bradbury

This week on the book club we will be reading 'En La Noche' by Ray Bradbury (apologies for the late posting of the book). This story tells the story of a small neighbourhood of tennents that is being kept awake by the wailing from for the woman next door. Actions must be taken, they cant go on without sleep forever, so they meet to decide what they will do...

this story is from the book 'Godlen Apple of the Sun' by Ray Bradbury, the tittle of whihc is based on the poem 'The Sonf of Wandering Aegnus' W.B. Yeats. The book was published in 1953 and the story 'En La Noche' was written in 1952.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

About the author

Ray Douglas Bradbury, American novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright, screenwriter and poet, was born August 22, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois.

"Do you know why teachers use me?

Because I speak in tongues. I write metaphors. Every one of my stories is a metaphor you can remember. The great religions are all metaphor.

We appreciate things like Daniel and the lion’s den, and the Tower of Babel. People remember these metaphors because they are so vivid you can’t get free of them and that’s what kids like in school. They read about rocket ships and encounters in space, tales of dinosaurs. All my life I’ve been running through the fields and picking up bright objects. I turn one over and say, Yeah, there’s a story. And that’s what kids like.

Today, my stories are in a thousand anthologies. And I’m in good company. The other writers are quite often dead people who wrote in metaphors: Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne. All these people wrote for children. They may have pretended not to, but they did."
