1 Corinthians 13: 13 (GNT)

13 Meanwhile these three remain: faith, hope, and love; and the greatest of these is love.

A to Z, Alpha to Omega

We have arrived at the end.

Our English alphabet starts with A = Alpha and B = Beta and ends in Z.

The Greek alphabet has fewer letters than ours and they come in a different order, so Zeta is the sixth letter, and Omega the last.

A visitor to our Church recently asked me why there was a little window high up with an A in it. I directed her to the other side of the Church where she could see the corresponding little window with a funny looking almost - O. The windows represent Alpha and Omega. The beginning and the end.

I’m not sure the person even knew the expression, but in the words of the old saying, “She kens noo.”

Writing this while Wimbledon is on (no, I am not glued to the telly, this house is a sport-free zone) I do know that the word ‘love’ is used to mean nil or zero, and my cryptic crossword habit often relies upon the fact.

So here is a nice little pun to garnish this alphabet soup.

We arrive at Omega, letter O, which could also be read as number 0, zero. So LOVE, the greatest thing, has the last word.

PRAYER:

Loving God,

all we need is love –

love for our brothers and sisters, whoever and wherever;

love for our family and friends;

love for people we don’t even like very much;

love for your beautiful world;

love for your word;

love for your amazing gift of Jesus;

love for the Holy Spirit our comforter;

love for you, our creator.

That is a lot of love,

but the love you give us is boundless,

unending,

overflowing,

beyond what we can imagine.

AMEN
