Romans 12: 9-13 (GNT)

9 Love must be completely sincere. Hate what is evil, hold on to what is good. 10 Love one another warmly as Christians, and be eager to show respect for one another. 11 Work hard and do not be lazy. Serve the Lord with a heart full of devotion. 12 Let your hope keep you joyful, be patient in your troubles, and pray at all times. 13 Share your belongings with your needy fellow Christians, and open your homes to strangers.

Well, we have worked our way all through the alphabet – are you still there?

The last word is no tailing off – zeal is energy, and commitment to a cause.

The word sometimes bears overtones of excess – a zealous person may seem narrow-minded, focussed on one cause, and zealots are not always comfortable companions.

‘Zeal for the kingdom’ is a good churchy phrase – but is it not just what we need to energise us, give us confidence, keep us enthused, in our life as followers of Jesus.

Today’s earworm is the hymn O breath of life, come sweeping through us (CH4 595) verse 4 of which says:

“Revive us Lord! Is zeal abating while harvest fields are vast and white?”

PRAYER:

Loving God,

we pray for the kind of zeal,

of enthusiasm,

of commitment,

that will enable us to spread your Good News

to all your people.

May we not grow weary,

but rise up on wings as eagles,

strong and purposeful,

to work for your kingdom.
