The power of politicians ebbs and flows

Psalm 146: 1-6

Praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord, my soul.

I will praise the Lord all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

Do not put your trust in princes,
in human beings, who cannot save.

When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on that very day their plans come to nothing.

Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord their God.

He is the Maker of heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything in them—
he remains faithful forever.

In our scripture reading this morning we are invited to lift our voices in praise to God. The psalmist reminds us that the power of politicians ebbs and flows. If we put our trust in human law-makers we will be eventually disappointed. However it is the faithfulness of God that remains forever.

Lord,
Guide all today who take high office
Give them the grace to serve the nation
Turn their hearts and ours today to the people who really matter
Draw close to the dispossessed and disappointed
Bring healing to the hurt and forgotten
Release the Terrorist from the spirit of hate and revenge
Reconcile our divisions and disagreements
Forgive those who have wronged our nation
Bring peace and justice to those whom our nation has wronged
Give them the courage to forgive and re-build better lives
Let wisdom and compassion influence all who lead
And turn our hearts to do your will
