The cost of our deliverance.

Romans 8:22

Romans 8.22

We know that the whole creation is groaning together and suffering labour pains up until now.

CH4 118 v3

Brooding Spirit, move among us;
be our partner, be our friend.
When our memory fails, remind us
whose we are, what we intend.
Labour with us, aid the birthing
of the new world yet to be,
free from status and division.
free for love and unity.

Ruth Duck

God, our labour pains are nothing compared with yours. You have taken aeons to work with what you have made, and in your sight one day is as a thousand years. Increase our wonder at the mystery of how things grow, and how the Creator beyond all worlds chose patiently to work within the matter, light and dark, we call the universe.

This day we celebrate the birth of him who came to share our toil, to bear our burdens, to wear our human nature.

This day we remember the cost of our deliverance.

This day we declare that Jesus Christ is the first born of all creation, the great sign of its future, and the first fruit of a new humanity.

Yes, Father, for so it has pleased you to labour with love in our midst.

Lo, within a manger lies he who built the starry skies,

He who, throned in height sublime sits amid the cherubim.

Hail, thou ever blessed morn! Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!

Sing through all Jerusalem, ‘Christ is born in Bethlehem!’

Amen.
