Hebrews 13: 1-2 (NIVUK)

1 Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. 2 Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.

Michael, a man in his mid thirties sits in a nondescript waiting room.

MICHAEL: “It was my sister’s colleague’s husband’s cousin’s drama teacher’s vet…

That is my sister Jaqueline’s colleague Marcia’s husband Nick’s cousin Simon’s drama teacher Estefania’s vet Anita…

So my sister Jaqueline works with Marcia who is married to Nick. Nick’s cousin Simon has a drama teacher, Estefania, and it was her vet Anita…

My little sister Jaqueline has worked with Marcia for ten years and they go on holiday together with her husband and Marcia’s husband Nick to North Wales every year. Nick has a cousin down in Truro, Simon, who goes to improv drama classes. His teacher Estefania has three cockatoos and her vet is called Anita. And it’s Anita.

Who saved my life I mean.

Jaqueline. Marcia. Nick. Simon. Estefania. Anita.

I’ve never met Marcia, Nick, Simon or Estefania, but if it wasn’t for them I’d never have met Anita.

And I wouldn’t be here.”

BARRY: “Wow.”

They both turn round suddenly and look up at Gabriel.

GABRIEL: “Excuse me is there anybody in this seat?”MICHAEL: “No, sorry just move my coat.”

GABRIEL: “Cheers pal.”

MICHAEL: “You’re welcome”

They all sit in silence for a minute.

BARRY: "So what’s your story?"

GABRIEL: “My mechanic’s nephew’s babysitter’s aunt’s carpet fitter…”

BARRY: “Saved your life?”

GABRIEL: “Saved my life.”

Prayer:

Dear God,

In our hospitality

our openness

our willingness to sit next to one another

we get glimpses

of the skeins of grace

that hold us together.

We give thanks for the kindness and compassion

woven into everything,

Amen.
