John 18: 33-38 (NIVUK)

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’

34 ‘Is that your own idea,’ Jesus asked, ‘or did others talk to you about me?’

35 ‘Am I a Jew?’ Pilate replied. ‘Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?’

36 Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.’

37 ‘You are a king, then!’ said Pilate.

Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.’

38 ‘What is truth?’ retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, ‘I find no basis for a charge against him.

High and holy God,

you send light and truth into the world

to guide all people to your sacred home:

a home shaped by your commitment to the truth which you are,

a home which is union with your Son who is the truth,

a home sanctified by your Spirit of truth.

Together we confess with shame our attempts to remake truth in our own image.

Your truth is public, never private,

Your truth is for sharing, never for grasping,

Your truth is life–generating, never life denying.

Have mercy upon us,

may the blood of the sacred Saviour,

shed upon his sacrificial throne,

be our forgiveness and our welcome into your Kingdom of truth.

Holy King of the Kingdom of truth,

grow in us a longing for truth.

Not an abstract, theoretical insight into reality or integrity,

but a deep experience of your being.

You are truth from which love is not absent,

    truth expressing itself in love.

You are truth which is creative and upbuilding,

    truth expressing itself in renewal.

You are truth upon which faith finds a sacred foundation,

    truth alive in faith.

Grant us to know your sacred truth,

may we be known by others as people belonging to the truth,

may the truth which you are set us truly free.
