Luke 9: 1-5

When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal those who were ill. He told them: ‘Take nothing for the journey – no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.’

So what shall we take with us on the journey?
What are the most precious things
the things we cannot leave behind?

Will it be the practical survival-kit type elements
- like water and matches, perhaps a compass or sat nav?
Or will it be photos of loved ones
or books we must read
or music to accompany us
into a journey of unknowns.

Will we drag with us
the old and familiar comfort blankets
or will we throw caution to the wind
and step out in faith
ready to be led
trusting in God to provide?

God who provides food for the journey
and rest for our souls
grant us the wisdom to trust in your provision
and to travel lightly
free from all that roots us to the here and now
free to experience adventure
on a journey into the unknown
with you the God of all journeys.
