The signs

Luke 9: 1-6

When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demonsand to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.

How will we know that the time is right?
What should we look for?
Will it be the neon signs
flashing in the darkness
luring us with their garishness?
Or will it be something much more subtle -
like dawn creeping in to the darkness?
Should we look in the places of commerce and prosperity?
Or in the hovels of human poverty?
Where God can we find you today?
Where will you reveal yourself
beckoning us to follow?
Will it be in paths we have walked often?
Or on different journeys, down new alleyways?
We are anxious to be on the way
but we are afraid of going in the wrong direction.
Reassure us, O God, that around every blind corner
and in every dead end
you are there
beckoning us forward
or turning us around
setting us on the right path
taking our hand
and leading us onward.
