Acts 4: 32-35 (NRSVA)

32 Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. 33 With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. 35 They laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.

A number of years ago I worked in Internal Communications for a large company. One of the roles I had covered two linked centres based in opposite sides of the country. I loved my job but one of the biggest frustrations was the replication of work. Both centres worked together but each had different ways of communicating to staff. So much time and energy were expended by people from both centres to create, in reality, the same work. It was only when they came together, to share resources and create content that the communication was efficient and effective.

I thought when we entered lockdown and churches throughout the country were physically closed that worship leaders would come together to create online worship and spiritual content for their shared communities. I thought that worship leaders would reach out and share creative skills with one another. But that hasn’t been the case. There has been a rush for churches to create online content, for live streaming of services. But instead of it being a community of worship leaders and churches working together sharing resources and talent it has been in the main individual churches doing their own thing. There is therefore an astounding amount of online content out there from churches of varying quality.

And yes, I understand the need for keeping together the local church family during this crisis, but there is also the opportunity now to reimagine what the church can be and will be in the future. We have the opportunity to open congregations up to the wider church within their area and to the people seeking Jesus in their area. What might church look like if we share resources and talent instead of keeping it to our own local congregations?

PRAYER:

Lord God,

Help us to see beyond ourselves and our local church
To see your vision
To be truly one in Christ

Amen.

INVITATION: Today, or anytime this week, look out for examples of people sharing resources and share the link below in the comments section.
