1 Corinthians 13:12a, Isaiah 55:8 (GNT)

1 Corinthians 13 12a What we see now is like a dim image in a mirror; then we shall see face-to-face.

Isaiah 55 8 “My thoughts,” says the Lord, “are not like yours,
and my ways are different from yours.

I loved my many holidays in Scarborough when I was young. Amongst the many amusements on the seafront was the house of mirrors, a good laugh guaranteed as you wandered round the mirrors inside that distorted you into all sorts of shapes and sizes, accompanied by funny faces! The apostle Paul’s mirror would be of polished metal and the image not too clear, a bit like the back of our spoon – we see but not too clearly. We think we know what God is like – we roughly get his ways – but we need to get our focus sharper, we need to leave our ideas and standards behind, and tune our lives into God’s ways, his way of thinking, which is often at odds with the world and human nature. It’s hard but we must try.

PRAYER:

Loving God, as we sort our hair in the mirror help us to pause for a moment and look and think before we set out on the day ahead. Is there something we need to change about ourselves? Help us to focus our lives on you, so that we may be able to see you at work in the world and join in. May our thoughts and words and actions be worthy and Christ-like. Amen.
