Let us build a house…

Listen to this daily worship

Psalm 127: 1a

1a Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labour in vain.

When we enter a building where worship has been conducted for hundreds of years the echoes remain. The very stones cry out, imbued as they are with voices of the faithful through the centuries. But although we refer to the church building as “The House of God”, we do not imagine that God is limited, or confined, by his house. When Moses met God on Mount Sinai, there was no building made by human hands within sight, and yet Moses was told to remove his shoes as he was standing “on holy ground”.

Other than a church building, therefore, where else might we encounter God? Where might we construct our edifice of praise which will raise voices in worship to God? Where will we find, or build, holy ground? Are we awake and alive to the presence of God in our everyday encounters, at home, at work, in school? A class of 8 to 10 year-olds was asked what they thought love was. One little girl said, “Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen."

How often do we stop, and listen, and see God in the faces of our family? Do we ever, “stop and listen” while we go about our daily business? In a busy street? And see God in the faces of strangers? Today, let’s ask God to help us to see his glory in everyone we meet, let us raise our voices in praise, and let us build a house where love can dwell.

PRAYER:

Loving God,

our bodies are your temple,

made in your image,

created to praise you,

to love you,

and to enjoy you for ever.

Help us to see you in one another

even those who do not yet know you.

And may we praise you as we encounter your creation,

knowing that whoever we meet

you have been there before us

and we stand on holy ground, Amen
