Isaiah 6: 1

1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple.

God, you know that each generation has a kind of corporate “in the year…” moment – more like “on the day…” moment, when we can pinpoint where we were when we experienced and grieved a loss together. Some of those are global and some very local, some remote, others personally wounding. Moments that cannot be changed. Moments that tear apart and then rebuild. And in the rebuilding is possibility. The possibility of faith. Faith that is not overwhelmed. Faith that refuses to be snuffed out. Faith that does not diminish pain but that holds out hope. Faith that does not exploit but gathers in the wings ready, when invited, to tenderly bind up the broken, heed the hurting, wait with the weary.

But first, there must be relationships on which to build, respect from which to endure and love that notices suffering and does not pass by. So, meantime, O God, may we simply see one another and know that, in adversity, we need one another.

God of faith, hope and love,
may we not wait until times are desperate
but discover you at work in one another, a God of relationships,
working through our pale mirroring of your love,
mining the rich seams that come from dark places,
unearthing treasure in every generation.
Be present in all our moments lending your depth of seeing
and your way of being.
Amen.
