Lamentations 3: 19-26 (NIV-UK)

19 

I remember my affliction and my wandering,
    the bitterness and the gall.

20 

I well remember them,
    and my soul is downcast within me.

21 

Yet this I call to mind
    and therefore I have hope:

22 

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
    for his compassions never fail.

23 

They are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.

24 

I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion;
    therefore I will wait for him.’

25 

The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
    to the one who seeks him;

26 

it is good to wait quietly
    for the salvation of the Lord.

Some mornings, I look at the news and the state of our world and I grieve.

Another summer of scorched earth, burning forests, flooded homes, exhausted rivers.

Creation groans, and something within me groans with it.

The writer of Lamentations knew what it was to sit among the ruins. Jerusalem was broken, the future uncertain, but he does not turn away. 

He remembers the bitterness. He names the sorrow.

And then — morning.

Not an escape from the ruins. Not a denial of what has been lost. Simply light arriving again.

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases.”

Perhaps this is the hope I need amid climate chaos. Not a cheap hope that says everything will somehow be fine, but a fierce, faithful hope that gets up with the sun and asks: what can love do today? What can God's love do today? What can my love do today?

God’s mercies are new every morning.

While the sun still rises, there is another day to cherish, to change, to pray, to act. 

Another day to love this beautiful, wounded earth.

Prayer:

God of each new morning, meet our grief with mercy and our despair with hope.

Teach us to love this wounded earth with courageous hearts and faithful hands. Amen.
