Luke 13: 20-21 (NIV)

20 Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.”

I do like home-baking. We are fortunate to have a lot of skilled bakers in our church who keep us stocked up with scones and cakes. I’m not much of a baker myself, but I love fresh bread. I’m afraid I cheat — we have a breadmaker machine — bung in the flour, some water and a bit of oil and 3 hours later — a fresh loaf! The smell is wonderful!

Luke 13: 20–21 compares the Kingdom of God to yeast that a woman mixes into flour until it permeates the whole batch. It's a divine baking metaphor — proof that heaven rises best when stirred with patience and a little mystery.

Imagine the woman, elbow-deep in dough, as an active participant in a cosmic parable. The yeast is tiny, invisible in action, but unstoppable in effect, like grace sneaking into your life when you weren’t looking, or that one group text that somehow includes your entire extended family and more!

So next time you're kneading bread (or waiting for the bread machine), remember: the Kingdom of God might be closer than you think; possibly in your kitchen, quietly expanding.

Prayer:

Lord of hidden wonders,

Thank You for the quiet work of Your Kingdom — like yeast in dough, unseen but unstoppable. Help us trust the small beginnings, the silent stirrings, the slow rise of grace in our lives.

May Your love spread through us, transforming everything it touches.

Bake us into something beautiful.

Amen.
