John 14: 15-27 (NRSVA)

15 ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. 17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither  sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.

18 ‘I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.’ 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, ‘Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?’ 23 Jesus answered him, ‘Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me.

25 ‘I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.

“I will talk to the Father, and he’ll provide you another friend so that you will always have someone with you. This friend is the Spirit of Truth… you know him already because he has been staying with you, and will even be in you.” (from verses 15-17 in The Message).

What does the Holy Spirit mean for you?

It’s often the forgotten third person of the Trinity…

We can easily get our heads around God and Jesus…

But the Holy Spirit?

How does that work in our lives?

At Pentecost we celebrate that Jesus breathed out his Spirit on the gathered church…

Do you know that the root of the word enthusiastic or to be enthused is literally in-spirited?

To have the Spirit literally living, dwelling in us…

What might it look like to live enthused… or wholeheartedly in the knowledge that God dwells in us, and we in God?

How might we let that knowledge change us and transform our living?

Where do you need the Spirit to enthuse you and bring life right now?

What dry and parched places are there within you or around you in need of life?

Why not spend a moment just breathing…

And perhaps visualising those parched areas of life…

Focus on your breathing… but don’t hold it…

PRAYER:

As you breathe in, ask God’s Spirit to fill you, to flood into those areas in need of life…

As you spend time in this practice, notice the areas in your body that are holding tension or areas of stress… and as you breathe out… let God take them… let them go.

Or perhaps you might like to repeat a favourite verse of Scripture as you breathe in and let it speak to you afresh today…

As God’s Spirit fills you, inspires you and enthuses you, ask God to direct your thoughts and your steps, let the Spirit speak to your imagination… and then give courage to your actions today.
