Psalm 136: 1 (NRSVA)

1 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.

“How can I keep from singing?” This refrain, from the hymn of the same name, really resonates with me.

I love singing. I have sung in choirs – school, church, choral societies – most of my life — not that I am particularly good at it, but it gives me great joy.

The Psalms contain many exhortations to make music –

Praise the Lord!
O Lord, I will always sing of your constant love.
Let us sing for joy to God!
Praise him with trumpets,
praise him with harps and lutes!

Singing is good for you. It is a physical activity — you have to breathe properly. Quiet passages need energy and control just as much as loud ones. You require concentration, attention to the conductor, attention to the voices around. To offer up this effort in praise of God is a joy and a privilege.

How can I keep from singing!

PRAYER:

Loving God, thank you for song.

Hymns, psalms, anthems, Songs of Praise,

offered with joy

to express our love,

our gratitude,

our delight in your world –

How can we keep from singing?
