Matthew 25: 37-40

37 The righteous will then answer him, ‘When, Lord, did we ever see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you a drink? 38 When did we ever see you a stranger and welcome you in our homes, or naked and clothe you? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison, and visit you?’ 40 The King will reply, ‘I tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these followers of mine, you did it for me!’

It is great to see help given through organised charities and through the Church to those in need in our world, but my heart warms even more when I hear of or witness small acts of kindness and generosity, often quietly done at cost to the giver, who makes no claim to religion. God sees all, doesn’t he?

Lord God, give us hearts full of love that we may reach out to others in need. The poverty and pain of this world could easily overwhelm us to the point of inactivity, but help us to be your hands and feet at work in the world to shed a little light into the lives of those in greatest need. Help us not to count the cost, but to help with willing and grateful hearts, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
