Psalm 111: 4 & 10 (NRSVA)

4 He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds;
    the Lord is gracious and merciful.

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
    all those who practise it have a good understanding.
    His praise endures for ever.

God is beyond time and space and so describing God is a never-ending, often confusing, task. Many may try but we cannot contain God to a verse or even a dozen verses.

Though our lives may be a travelling suitcase of dreams, stories and prayers, God will never, ever fit in a suitcase.

There can be times in our lives when we fear God and when to do so might be the beginning of wisdom: the beginning of realising that the reality of an awesome God, and God’s loving grace, will always be beyond our full understanding. But if we notice we are scared to come to God it is time to ask why. Have we done something we are ashamed of? Have we lost our connection with God? Are we in need and worried God will judge us like some verses of the Bible suggest?

Whatever it is, realising the fear and admitting it is the beginning of reconnecting with God. Reconnecting with God’s mercy, with God’s wonderful deeds. Reconnecting with God’s dream for our lives, for our relationship with creation, and with peace.

PRAYER:

Dear uncontainable God

We are often guilty of trying to define you by our own standards and understanding.

Help us to find peace in your mystery and your greatness.

Lead us to your side again this day and everyday.

Amen
