Don’t just stand there, do something!

Luke 6: 31-35 (NRSVA)
31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.
32 ‘If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Do to others as you would have them do to you. It is often called The Golden Rule. Whether you are a person of faith or not, isn’t it a good rule for life? We may hear people say that they live a good life, that they do not harm others. But the Golden Rule seeks to go further. It is not just a case of not doing any harm to others but actively seeking to do something positive for others.
How do we treat others at work? How do we treat each other in the Church? How can we play our part in helping others? Can we support a charity? Can we donate to the Foodbank? We are encouraged in this life to get a good job, make sure we have a good pension, and look after number one. Jesus told a story once about a man like that. He was doing well, pretty wealthy, life was good. He decided to tear down his barns and build bigger ones, and he said to himself, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” Problem was, life was going to end soon. And what would his life resume look like? What will ours look like?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank you for your selfless love, your love that put us first. Help us to put you first in our lives, for only then does life find its true perspective. You command us to love God and love our neighbours. Forgive us when we try to separate the inseparable. May our love for you drive us into action and do something positive for others, near and far. Amen.
