companionship and commitment

Ruth 1:16

Ruth said, ‘Do not press me to leave you or turn back from following you!  Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge;  your people shall be my people.’

Reflection

Sometimes the steps we take in any given day will have long-term results.  These results may never be seen by us, but each step or action we take carries meaning if it is rooted in principles of companionship and commitment.  Ruth, in her decision to stay with Naomi, made a strong decision for companionship and commitment.  In this starting-point an unexpected history and legacy was made possible. All leaders who demonstrate effectiveness recognise the importance of their companions and the need to commit to a future which may not seem clear.

Prayer

God,
Even you chose not to go it alone.
You made us in your image:
as companions for one another;
in relationship from the very start.

You have made a covenant with us:
a commitment for life;
an unbroken promise to the very end.

Continue to teach me what it means to be a true companion for others.
Lead me towards a way of living based on trusting commitment.

Amen.
