Hebrews 12: 1-3

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy that was set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

In the TV drama ‘Broken’, Roz is an Office Manager, attractive, smartly dressed, intelligent, living in an affluent part of town. Beneath this image of success there is a gambling addiction financed by money embezzled from her employer, over £200, 000. She comes to Father Michael bewildered as to why this has happened to her, resolved to take her own life.

God our Father,

So often we are a mystery to ourselves.

Why did we say that? Why did we get into that relationship? Why did we make that response?

There are so many powerful forces that destroy so much that is good in our lives.

Help us to fix our eyes on Jesus who endured so much, who knew the deepest darkness, but emerged as the Conqueror of sin and death.

We want him to take us through our worst of times and to know his peace.

Amen.
