Week 6 – A Place to Discover

 

The Bible meets us where we are and then invites us to move into a place of discovery and adventure — to discover ourselves through the context of our relationship with God and one another. This awareness of the other is the work of the Holy Spirit, the presence of God who reminds us we are made in His image — made to be in communion with God and with others, to love our neighbour as ourselves. The Bible is a spiritual platform full of radical paradigm shifts in human understanding of God.

Looking at Genesis 1 as a mirror, then going to Ezekiel 37 for the discovery of vision in the midst of death, and finally to Philippians 4 to encounter the peace that comes from self-awareness and hope for the future, we will discover the progression of the integrated message running through the various genres of Scripture. Namely, we are made in the image of God in order to enjoy living to bring glory to God and be part of that enjoyment forever.

 

1. The Teaching: The Mirror of Creation — Genesis 1: 1–5, 26–31

  • Theme: Finding our true identity and design in the image of our Creator.
     
  • Context: Genesis presents the creation of humanity as God’s masterpiece, crafted in His image, designed for intimate communion with Him and one another. Our familiarity with these words can distract us from the radical truth that all humans bear the divine image — we look like God!
     
  • Discussion Questions: When we look into the "mirror" of God's word, how does knowing we are made in His image challenge the false identities, comparisons, or labels the world tries to place on us? Why is true self-discovery impossible apart from understanding who God is?


 

2. The Prophets: Vision in the Midst of Death — Ezekiel 37: 1–14

  • Theme: The life-giving breath of the Spirit awakening us from stagnation to divine purpose.
     
  • Context: In the valley of dry bones, Ezekiel faces a scene of total hopelessness. Then the breath of God (the Holy Spirit) sweeps in, breathing life into the valley of death, bringing a vision that was dead back to life.
     
  • Discussion Questions: Do you believe the life-giving work of the Holy Spirit can awaken us to a deeper self-awareness and remind us of the vibrant purpose God has for us? Does this just happen, or do we need to seek after it? Where do we long to see God's transformative power in our local communities?

 

3. The Epistles: Peace, Self-Awareness, and Future Hope — Philippians 4: 4–9

  • Theme: Guarding our hearts and minds to live out our ultimate design of joy and glory.
     
  • Context: Paul urges believers to focus their minds on what is true, noble, and pure, promising that the "God of peace will be with you." The picture of peace offered in these verses is not so much about the absence of negatives (such as conflict or hardship) but about presence of positive things.
     
  • Discussion Questions: How does experiencing God's peace give us the self-awareness and hope needed to truly enjoy living? What is one way you can step further into that joy and bring glory to God this week?
