Where can I make a difference today?

Jeremiah 29: 4 – 7

4 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 ‘Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. 7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.’

The Judeans in exile were confused; how should they live in an alien culture, without temple or sacrifice? The prophet’s advice, speaking in God’s name, is that they should seek the welfare of the city in which they were living. Christians living in two kingdoms at once are called to do the same. Dealing with questions of employment, equality, industrial relations are our responsibility too.

Lord Jesus Christ alive and at large in your world,
help us to follow and find you there today
in the places where we meet people, spend money, earn our living and make plans.
Take us as disciples of your kingdom, to see through your eyes,
to hear the questions you are asking,
to welcome all with your trust and compassion
and, by the inspiration of your spirit, to challenge and change those things that contradict God’s love,
through the power of your cross and resurrection.

Where can I make a difference today, however small?
