John 12: 20-28 (NRSVA)

20 Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ 22 Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour.

27 ‘Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—“Father, save me from this hour”? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’

I don’t wear a collar and often when people find out I’m a minister they are surprised. What usually happens is they then try and explain why they don’t go to church. And I’ll respond by saying that that is okay, that they don’t need to justify themselves to me and I just try and have a normal conversation with them. But then something happens, God moves them. I don’t know what happens or how it happens but something happens! Perhaps during the conversation they catch a glimpse of how God has worked in my life, me an ordinary wee wummin fae Coatbridge! And they want that too. And so they start to share more of themselves, their sadness, their hopes, their desire for more meaning, their longing for love and acceptance. I used to resent this. I’d be thinking, ‘I’m off duty, I came here to enjoy myself.’ But then I realised that we are never off duty, that our full lives are an invitation to encounter and share God’s love.

“Sir, we’d like to see Jesus.”

Are you able to recognise the seekers who God puts on your path?

And are you ready to show them the face of Jesus?

PRAYER:

Lord Jesus,

May we be your face shining to the world

May we be your healing touch in the world

May we be your transforming love in the world.

Amen

Lent Disciplines

Take a few minutes today to be mindful of your breath, perhaps breathing slowly in and out. As you do, consider the day ahead and think of all the places and situations your breath is going to take you today.
