Visible

Listen to this daily worship
Matthew 5: 14-16 (NRSVA)
14 ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
I don’t think Jesus would have liked Calvin’s metaphor of the ‘invisible church’. We are light, in the world, and visible. It’s easy to pick holes in the light, to complain about the church, to lament the lack of Christian witness in politics or whatever. Jesus has gathered his friends around him and tells them, ‘You are the light – so go and shine!’ He is saying just the same today. Good works, not just good words.
Prayer:
Lord, let there be light, and let there be people of the light
in public life
in commerce and industry
in agriculture and rural life
among the low-born
among the high-flying
shaping the media of our age
influencing young people
in all the arts
in my own life
this day and always. Amen.
