Exodus 23: 9-13 (NRSVA)

9 You shall not oppress a resident alien; you know the heart of an alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.

10 For six years you shall sow your land and gather in its yield; 11 but the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, so that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave the wild animals may eat. You shall do the same with your vineyard, and with your olive orchard.

12 For six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you shall rest, so that your ox and your donkey may have relief, and your home-born slave and the resident alien may be refreshed. 13 Be attentive to all that I have said to you. Do not invoke the names of other gods; do not let them be heard on your lips.

We have a God who cares. A God who cares for all his creation, earth, human and animal. He gave us guidance to follow so that we too could care for his creation and ourselves. Guidance that meant the land was not exploited, our fellow humans would not be exploited and we would not over extend ourselves. God gave guidance for the land to be rested and for human life to take time to rest. God gave sensible guidance which we have chosen in our arrogance to ignore.

I wonder why it is so?

Is it because we as Christians choose to ignore much of the Old Testament? View them as stories told for a specific people at a specific time? Do we think it has no relevance for us now?

Or is it because we are simply too tired? Do we not care for God’s creation or our fellow humans because firstly we fail to take care of ourselves?

How many of us truly keep a Sabbath?

Maybe to start actively caring for God’s creation and our brothers and sisters around the world we first need to make sure we are keeping one day of the week for rest and to allow the Lord to rejuvenate us, nourish us and revive us?

PRAYER:

For the next 10 minutes I simply rest my soul in you Lord.

In the silence I breath in your peace.
