The time is now

Acts 1:4-8

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Reflect on Revelation 21:1-4

Almighty God, having to wait is not my speciality! I want drive-thru food, fibre-feed broadband - and as for waiting on buses and trains, don't even go there!

So I'm not sure how I would have reacted if I'd been with those first disciples when Jesus instructed them to 'Wait!'

Why wait when there's work to be done? The time is now!

And yet still, even now, you tell us to wait because without the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit that work will forever be beyond us.

Lord, open our eyes to see that we are utterly dependent on you - on the indwelling of your Spirit. There is no power other than your power within us.

Lord, I am ready to serve you, keen to get started. Yet I will wait. I will wait for you to empower me. Come, then, fill me with your Spirit. Even now, Lord, fill me with your Spirit.

Set a fire down in my soul that I can't contain and I can't control

Father, I look to the day when the waiting shall be over and when your Kingdom shall be on earth as in heaven.

I pray on Jesus' name, Amen.
