The gift of sport

PROVERBS 8: 27-31

Lady Wisdom says:

I was there when he set the heavens in place,
when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,

when he established the clouds above
and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,

when he gave the sea its boundary
so the waters would not overstep his command,
and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.

Then I was constantly [playing] at his side. (1)
I was filled with delight day after day,
rejoicing always in his presence,

rejoicing in his whole world
and delighting in mankind.

(1) the word is śâchaq meaning ‘to laugh, play, mock, to sport, to play.’

Creator God,
Thank you for the playfulness of wisdom in your creation,
For the sense of the unpredictable, the spontaneous and the adventurous.
Thank you that your life-giving presence that is full of playfulness.

The dream is over, this is the morning
And so in this new morning teach me to play, to cheer, to laugh and delight as one created.
Let there be fun and laughter, teasing and silliness in whatever I play.
Thank you for the gift of sport to remind me of these things.
Amen.
