Listen to this daily worship

Luke 6: 20 (NRSVA)

20 Then he looked up at his disciples and said:

‘Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.

You may well be familiar with the series of credit card adverts which suggest that, if one is willing to spend the money one has (or hasn’t!) on expensive products, one will find the experiences such things provide are in fact ‘priceless’.

Such clever marketing can convince us that everything worth having in life has a price tag or purchase plan attached. You either have the means for a full life, or you don’t.

But the love of Jesus is not out of reach for the poor. Not because they get a discounted, subpar version. But because this priceless gift has no price tag.

It isn’t just a handy coincidence that this love is not for purchase, it is an intentional choice on the part of the Father on behalf of those who would find their worth in Him. He takes what cannot be bought and offers it in abundance to those who trust that the kingdom is open to them when the world is often not. As James writes,

“Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?" (James 2:5)

The openness of the poor to the love of God is all that is required from them. No credit checks. No bill with interest appearing in twelve months time. No bailiffs at the doors. A love beyond calculation, bought for us at the full price of calvary and offered as a life changing gift.

Never forget — it’s easier to take hold of something good when your hands are empty than when they are full (see Luke 6: 24-25)!

Prayer:

Jesus, thank you that you bore the once and for all cost so that your priceless gift of love could be made available to all who would accept it. Thank you that you love us so far beyond the weight of our wallets and that nothing in this world, even when considered of extraordinary value, compares to what you offer.

Amen
