Thank you for fresh love

Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 1 (NRSVA)
1
Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread,
or sit in the seat of scoffers;2
but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.3
They are like trees
planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.4
The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.5
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgement,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;6
for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
Stagnant water is hardly a sensory delight.
Many of us have memories of their toes slime-slipping into virulently shaded tide-abandoned pools in our efforts to scramble to a fresh starfish filled wonderland ‘just a bit further’ over the rocks.
Or perhaps you have been wading down a stream for the perfect skipping stone, only to find a nose-wrinkling inlet filled with foamy scum.
My family would also point to my propensity for forgetting to refresh flower vase water and the ensuing sludgy decay stink from displays supposed to be bringing reminders of life and vitality to our home.
There is nothing stagnant about the love we find in God. The psalmist points to the fresh, life giving, constantly renewing life source of his Word. It sustains and prospers.
Yet a choice is offered in these verses. Choose life or choose to wither. Choose delight in him or the disdain of others. Choose to be planted in a source that fulfils or to simply dry and drift with the winds of the world.
Prayer:
I don’t want stale
I don’t want sour
And I can’t keep on living in decay
So plant my heart in your word
And keep my thoughts pure,
And keep me fresh in your love today.
Thank you, Jesus.
Amen
