1 Corinthians 13: 7-8 (GNT)

7 Love never gives up; and its faith, hope, and patience never fail.

8 Love is eternal. There are inspired messages, but they are temporary; there are gifts of speaking in strange tongues, but they will cease; there is knowledge, but it will pass.

God’s love is real, solid, lasting.

In our throw-away society we sometimes lose sight of the benefits of solid craftsmanship, objects made to last. True, there is a fashion for upcycling, giving things a new lease of life, but there is an awful lot of flimsy discardable costly stuff. Of course plastic has its uses, but like all commodities it should be used with care and discretion.

So it is with words – an earlier verse cautioned us about our careless use of language.

We do use the word ‘love’ lightly – Marmite anyone?

With God, eternal God, we are in a different time-scale altogether.

God’s love is for ever. Can we really take in what that means? For ever?

“For I am certain that nothing can separate us from his love: neither death nor life, neither angels nor other heavenly rulers or powers, neither the present nor the future, neither the world above nor the world below—there is nothing in all creation that will ever be able to separate us from the love of God which is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8: 38-39, GNT)

Prayer:

Loving God, thank you for your enduring love.

Your love is the same, yesterday, today, for ever.

Your love is unaffected by our limited notions of time.

Our minds struggle to grasp what ‘for ever’ really means.

Perhaps one day at a time is all we can manage –

But we know that you are there for us, for ever.

Loving God, accept our gratitude and love.
