Thank you for enduring love

Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 138 (NRSVA)
1
I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart;
before the gods I sing your praise;2
I bow down towards your holy temple
and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness;
for you have exalted your name and your word
above everything.3
On the day I called, you answered me,
you increased my strength of soul.4
All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord,
for they have heard the words of your mouth.5
They shall sing of the ways of the Lord,
for great is the glory of the Lord.6
For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly;
but the haughty he perceives from far away.7
Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies;
you stretch out your hand,
and your right hand delivers me.8
The Lord will fulfil his purpose for me;
your steadfast love, O Lord, endures for ever.
Do not forsake the work of your hands.
Psalm 138 might be described as a “Thank You” psalm. It was written in response to an answered prayer. We don’t know what the prayer was, and we don’t even know exactly what the answer was. But what we do know is that God answered that prayer. The result is this beautiful song of thanks, for the writer isn’t thanking God with words alone, but with his whole heart.
We may often thank God for the little things that make life good and worthwhile, like waking up to a bright new day, or having wholesome food, good friends, and a loving family. But this Psalm is much deeper than that. Everything that is in him is offering thanks to God.
In an age when people served many gods, the Psalm writer proclaims His faith in the God above all gods; not a god made by humankind, but a God who does indeed answer us when we call to Him.
In a life of uncertainty and human betrayal, God is a solid resting place. And so today we give thanks for enduring love.
The Psalm writer thanks God with his whole heart, for God’s steadfast love endures for ever. Surely nothing can bring thankfulness to our hearts more than God’s free grace and mercy.
Pray today that you will have confidence in God, the humility to call out to Him for salvation, and the peace that your life is safely in God's hands, fulfilling His purpose for you. Be thankful today for the enduring mercy and grace of God freely given through Jesus Christ.
Prayer:
Thank you, Lord, for your unfailing love. Thank you that you never give up on us, nor change your promises, and that you continue to work in our lives. Strengthen and embolden us to witness to your love, that others too may sing Your praise and trust in your enduring love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
