1 Corinthians 13: 12-13 (NRSVA)

12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

Consider this: God exists in an eternal community of love that has never been created but has always been. A community that has no beginning or end. A community of one Goodness, made up of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Three distinct persons, neither male nor female, but one in Spirit from whom we humans derive our understanding of personhood. Three equal persons in the oneness of the being God.

Athanasius, the early church father, explained the Trinity something like the following. The Father thought the word that had always existed. The Son was the word that had always been spoken. The Spirit is the breath on which the word has always been carried. The meaning of the word is love. Love lives eternally, redeeming lost relationships, restoring communion and healing human personhood to our created glory. The Trinity heals our loneliness giving us meaning as we spin around in time and space. The Trinity tells us we are made to be in communion with each other and the triune God. We are made to live forever in communion.

PRAYER:

Father, Son and Holy Spirit

You are beyond the language of gender

Your personhood is neither male nor female

Your understanding leads me into mystery

I try to doubt you

But I find I’m drawn into you

The more I seek to question you

The more I encounter your presence

It’s as though I hear the wistful echo of an unknown past

Like some distant DNA link making contact

Like a stirring up within me

Calling me home inviting me into a lost love

Tears well up as I long for true communion

Communion I have never known

Yet a communion that has shaped me

A communion and community for which I was made

Father, Son and Holy Spirit

I cannot deny you

Collectively you call me and guide me

I want to know you Father

To understand the ‘why’, the meaning

Then the Son speaks on your behalf

He opens the way into your presence

Through a cross shaped space

The Spirit holds the truth in suffering

And reveals the Word

And Love is born again in a human heart

And the mystery is revealed through faith

And this doubting soul finds a place to belong.
